Coronavirus - Protecting your family

Here at Tiggy + Bo we fully understand that you need to go about your daily business; from running errands to the school run but feelIng safe in the knowledge that you are doing all you can to PROTECT your family.

With the current surge of coronavirus diagnoses and constant news headlines of a fast-spreading epidemic, images of passengers, and holiday makers donning face masks, including A listers such as Gwyneth Paltrow, it's no wonder we are all feeling a little overwhelmed, confused, stressed and let's be honest, a bit scared, especially when it comes to the safety of our little ones.

We’ve been busy here at Tiggy + Bo, reading up on the latest news and information on the COVID-19 virus; including the New Scientist, the BBC and the World Health Organisation (WHO) to understand as much as possible about the virus and what we can all do to protect ourselves.

We’ve summarised the best practices for keeping you and your family safe right now and there’s a link to the WHO website at the bottom of this article. Here's what they say:

WORLD HEALTH ORGANISATION - CORONAVIRUS ADVICE IN SUMMARY:

1 Wash your hands frequently

Use an alcohol-based hand rub (these are effective at killing viruses potentially on your hands) or thoroughly with soap and water.  Including after coughing/sneezing, when caring for the sick, before, during and after you prepare food, before eating, after toilet use, after handling animals/waste, when hands are visibly dirty.  Frequently use an alcohol-rub

2 Stay at least 1 metre (3 feet) away from yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing

Small liquid droplets from the nose and mouth can be breathed in including the COVID-19 virus)

3 Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth

Contaminated hands from touching infected surfaces can transfer the virus to these parts and from here the virus can enter your body.

4 Practice respiratory hygiene

Protect those around you and cover your mouth and nose with your hand or a tissue when you cough or sneeze, then dispose of the tissue or wash your hands as above straight away.  Avoid spitting in public.

5 If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention - call in advance

Remember to share previous travel history with your health care provider.

And what about masks? Should we be wearing them and how do we protect our babies?

WHO say this about wearing masks;

If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection.

Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.

Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

Before putting on a mask, clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

Cover mouth and nose with mask and make sure there are no gaps between your face and the mask.

Avoid touching the mask while using it; if you do, clean your hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.

Replace the mask with a new one as soon as it is damp and do not re-use single-use masks.

To remove the mask: remove it from behind (do not touch the front of mask); discard immediately in a closed bin; clean hands with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
